Student Union Flyer
Before the Winter Solstice (12.13.06)

People often think it is difficult to make a difference. They sometimes feel overwhelmed or inadequate. The Frequency Mutineers are trying to tear this kind of "wall" down. The key is to keep things simple and to take advantage of the resources you already have no matter how paltry they seem. For example:

We meet almost nightly at the Student Union (hey, come over and meet us :-) on the campus of Bowling Green State University. In the computer lab, there are some nice "group study" areas enclosed in glass. On the way over from the Radio Station we pick up dropped pens, and when we get there we go through the trash and find interesting printouts which have been discarded. Using these simple salvaged items, we then scratch out an activist or artistic saying and mount it on the glass "windows" of our temporary "home". We also add our stencil art, club flyer (q.v., images), and whatever else we have with us to the "display". Given these behaviors and this set up, (trust me) we attract plenty of attention, and we use that attention to expose people to what we are doing. And although we’re frequently reprimanded for being rowdy (audio sample available upon request ;-) we have yet to be thrown out for our "radical collage". After all, we figure it has to be hard to remove someone from an office with a giant "End Racism" stencil taped on it.

Flyer Found In Trash
Before the Winter Solstice (12.01.06)

This is what happens when two projects collide. Please recall that the Frequency Mutineers are funded by Unacceptable Refuse (www.UnacceptableRefuse.org), and that Unacceptable Refuse spends its nights going through dumpsters. The Frequency Mutineers spend their days handing out flyers (front, back). So guess what Unacceptable Refuse occasionally finds in the trash?

Finding your own flyer in the dumpster is in some ways discouraging, but it is in other ways encouraging. First, it shows that your street team is actually doing their job. Second, it shows the control you can have over your life and your impact on the environment. That is, you can "complete the circle" by recovering your own "waste" and thus have a defendable lifestyle simply by making a little extra effort.

In sum, we try to make our promotional items with salvaged or recycled materials. And then we try to recover the items that aren't needed for re-use. Our art is important, but working responsibly is more so. Fortunately, we are demonstrating that it is possible to do both.
